ABOUT Leahy Stock Farm

Our family has farmed in the Douro area since 1825. Our family represents the 5th, 6th and 7th generation of farmers. We have been at this present location since 1997. In 2014, we purchased the farm Bernard was raised on. We now also farm this property with our son Patrick and his wife Deanna and children. Our daughter Clara established the Icelandic sheep flock from which our lamb comes from. Our son Daniel is also regularly involved with farm activities.

We have been offering our farm raised beef and lamb through on farm sales, the Lakefield Farmers' Market and the Peterborough Regional Farmers' Market.

Whole, pastured raised chickens and turkeys are also available starting in late summer.

Leahy Beef and Lamb – We are proud to offer a wide variety of beef and lamb cuts all processed at local government inspected facilities.

Our beef is from home raised Shorthorn and Simmental cattle, with no artificial hormones or medicated feed. The animals used for meat are fed grain in combination with hay or pasture as the season allows. The cow herd and replacement heifers generally receive no grain. They are managed with twice daily pasture moves in the growing season and field bale grazing in winter. From time to time we offer 100% grass fed beef. Our definition of 100 % grass fed is “ managed pasture grazing in the growing season and hay in the dormant season with salt and mineral supplement. No cereal grain, grain corn, grain pellets, grain mixes or corn silage ever in the life of the animal.”

Our lamb is from the purebred Icelandic sheep flock. This breed is known for its hardiness, forage do-ability and tender, flavourful meat. They are rotationally grazed in the growing season and have a hay diet in the winter months. A mineral supplement is available to them at all times. Icelandic sheep have a dual coated fleece, the tog and the thel, which provides versatility and makes it sought after by spinners and fiber artists.

We raise chickens and turkeys on pasture during the summer months. They arrive on the farm as day old chicks and are moved onto the pasture early on. They spend their days foraging and resting in the shade of their movable shelter. Electric mesh fences protect them from predators while providing them with access to green forage. Besides the bugs and assorted plants on the pasture, they are fed a mixed grain ration and have the use of an automatic watering system.
